Misery - Movie Review

Misery is a 1990 American psychological thriller film based on Stephen King's 1987 novel and starring James Caan, Kathy Bates, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, and Frances Sternhagen. Directed by Rob Reiner, the film received critical acclaim for Bates's performance as the psychopathic Annie Wilkes, and Bates won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Actress for her role,making Misery, as of 2014, the only Stephen King adaptation to be an Oscar winning film.The film was ranked #12 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

My Review

It has been many years since I have read the book Misery, but I always remember how much I really enjoy it. Hopefully it won't be too long before I get the opportunity to read it again. But, my oldest is home from school today with pneumonia, so we decided to watch Misery - it was on one of our movie channels. 

We both have seen it before (me quite a few times, her only a few) but to be honest, I never get tired of it. I just read an interview with Stephen King in which he compares Annie Wilkes to cocaine...if you are interested in finding out why you should pick up the Rolling Stone and read it, it is excellent. When Paul Sheldon finishes his latest novel, he heads out in a horrible snowstorm, veering off the snow covered road. Thankfully (yeah right) Annie Wilkes comes across his car and drags him out, bringing him back to her home to mend him...after all, she does have a nursing background. At first, Paul is somewhat flattered that his #1 fan is the one taking care of him, even though he seems to know right away that something is a little off. But, he quickly realizes that she isn't only taking care of him, but holding him prisoner as well. 

James Caan is just ok as Paul Sheldon - I do feel that this role could have been better served. But, Kathy Bates won the Oscar for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes, and I will tell you it is extremely well deserved. 

If you haven't seen Misery, or think that because it is King you will be scared, I am here to tell you, you won't. But, please read the book first...I believe that this is necessary with all book/movie adaptations, but especially with King's.

My Review:

With Halloween right around the corner, I am really enjoying watching some of the classic horror movies, movies I haven't seen in many, many years. Halloween would be one of those movies.

Are parts of it ridiculous? Of course, just like all slasher movies, this one has areas where you question the person for doing things they do. But, I think Michael Myers has always been my favorite slasher, over Freddy and Jason. There is just something more ominous about a young boy who has killed his sister, and then escapes from an institution to find the sister that got away (well, she was an infant at the time of the original murder). Of course the franchise goes on to make a bunch more movies, and I will probably review these at some point. Do they go overboard, just like the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises? Absolutely. But, this original horror movie is still worth the watch to this day. I loved watching it, just like I did the first time I saw it.

I was chatting the other day with a friend of mine and he said something that caught my attention, he said my readers want to know more about me, they want to know who BawB is. So I walked away from that conversation wondering who I am, really, and all I could come up with was that I’m a nobody that took some time to share his spiritual beliefs and inspiration with the world, and then I remembered my favorite saying that I have chosen to make my “Mantra” everybody that is a somebody started out as a nobody.

That’s right, I am a nobody today, I am one with the world, a being that is akin to all other beings, I breathe, I smile, therefore I am. But, now I am different than all the other wonderful nobody’s in the world because I have done something that might make me a somebody one day. I am a published author, by no means am I “like” the great published authors of the world, but I followed my dreams and I chose to try my best at something I was comfortable doing.

The more I think about it, the more I recognize all the somebody’s out there, all of my friends, all of their friends and all of their children’s friends, they are all somebody’s as yet unrecognized. How many lifetimes have we ambled our paths, wondering who we are, has anybody ever asked you about you? Have you ever had the pleasure of introducing yourself as the best you that the world has ever seen? Well, try it one day, believe in yourself that much and see how it feels to be a somebody. Take a moment in the next day or two to answer this question; who am I? And see who you come up with. What do you do? What would you like to do? What makes you happy and have you enjoyed it recently?

As for me, well let me introduce myself again, but this time as a somebody that nobody recognizes … Yet! I am BoB aka BawB, I am a writer, I have spent most of this lifetime seeking the easiest path I could find to happiness. I found it, it was right under my feet for the entire time, I just had to believe I was happy being me. I believe in life, and I feel like I am a better person inside because I share the wonders of living, I have no worries when it comes to sharing a smile and I have a million left because I AM happy being me.

MY REVIEW:

The Halloween series has been one of my favorites for many years. For some reason Michael Myers has always creeped me out. I think it partially has to do with the mask (even if it is William Shatner, lol) and the fact that he doesn't speak. Sure, he can't be killed, but you get over that and just enjoy the movies for what they are.

With that said, I was a little disappointed in this remake of the 1981 original. I have to admit I haven't seen a Rob Zombie remake before this so I don't know if this is typical of his style. If so, I may just steer clear. I get it, these are pretty simple plots (if you even want to call it that). Killer wants to kill. People want to live. There was just something about this one that left a lot to be desired. Pretty unbelievable, considering there usually isn't much to these types of movies. I do know that Donald Pleasance adds a lot as Dr. Loomis in the original and maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know, just wasn't a fan.

Scary recommedations

So, Halloween season is upon us. And I for one am extremely excited! This is my absolute favorite time of year - it has been since I was young. The change in colors and temperature, the decorations that people put out, and all sorts of delightful things to watch on tv...the scarier the better.

But, I do have a confession to make. Over the years my time has become pretty limited, and having to younger kids who are around at night when I do most of my tv watching, it makes it hard to watch anything too scary. I have made a promise to myself that I am going to try and fit in two horror/thriller/suspense movies a week. Now, here's where you come in. I am needing some recommendations. Send them my way, I'd love to hear what you think is a movie that might scare me.

And, please don't stop with movies - tv shows, books, blogs, whatever you can find. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
