Author: Sarah Remy
Publisher: Harper Voyager Impulse
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Past Stonehill Downs, beyond unforgiving scrubland and perilous mountain peaks, militant tribes gather on white sand . . .

With the Red Worm plague vanquished, and Malachi and Liam safely returned from Roue, Avani expects life in Wilhaiim to return to normal. But Mal has been changed by his journey across the long sea, and now walks dangerously close to the edge of madness, while the horrors of war in a foreign land have transformed Liam from a naïve lad to a young man seeking his place as sidhe among mortals.

And the plague has left chaos in its wake: Wilhaiim’s priests are rising against King Renault, a serial killer is taking vengeance on His Majesty's unwary subjects, and someone is using forbidden bone magic to kindle the Automata—mechanized monsters born of ancient necromancy.

As Avani works to contain unrest and expose a murderer, she is unaware that a far greater threat is rolling in from the east: a bloodthirsty desert army intent on destruction. Magic will be tested and friendship tried as Avani and Mal battle new peril and old temptation in this stunning follow up to Across the Long Sea.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That I'm capable of writing in any surroundings no matter how busy if a deadline is pressing.
How many books have you written? Can you pick a favorite?
Five or six, now. My favorite is WINTER, a YA urban fantasy set in DC and Manhattan. I'm really attached to Winter as a character; he reminds me of myself. THE BONE CAVE is a close favorite. I'm enjoying the writing both Avani and Mal as they struggle with the temptation that comes with too much power. They both deal with that temptation in such different ways.
What do you think makes a great story?
An interesting character, a believable conflict, and a relatable resolution.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A veterinarian or an author. I'm not a vet, but I do have half a million animals. …maybe not that many. I've lost count.
What books have influenced your life the most?
Honestly, it changes depending on where I am in the adventure that is my life.  THE HOBBIT, when I read it in third grade, made me want to write fantasy. Harry Potter, when I read it in college, made me want to protect the magic that is my own individuality. Conan Doyle taught me about mysteries, Stephen King made me want to write monsters.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I'm late to Maggie Stiefvater, but I read all of THE RAVEN CYCLE in a five day break I took between deadlines and adored them. As someone who dreams vividly every night, I was fascinated by the idea of dreaming things - wonderful things and evil things both - into reality.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I don't have a mentor; applications are open!

MEET THE AUTHORS

I started spinning stories as a child when I tried to entertain my younger sister at night when we were supposed to be going to sleep. In the dark, my stories typically took on a scary or paranormal element -- didn't do much to put us to sleep. Today, I hope my stories still fail to put readers to sleep, but rather take them on a journey. That's what I've been on since I decided to make writing my focus. As a reporter and magazine feature writer, I truly enjoy learning as I work on stories. As a romance writer, I enjoy doing the research and following an evolving story of my characters. I'm still learning as I go.

Lainee Cole’s love affair with books began when she was young, and her mother encouraged her love of reading. By the time she was in seventh grade, Lainee was making up her own stories and poems, exploring various styles of writing. Ah, the drama of junior high. She wouldn't go back to those days for anything! But reading voraciously and exploring different types of writing led her to romances. She loves the challenge of writing romance, developing characters and figuring out what makes them tick. They often take on a life of their own, surprising and annoying her. But they also give her hope and inspire her to follow her dreams. Lainee strives to write stories that will make readers laugh and cry, give them hope, and encourage them to believe in the power of love.

Excerpt from A Warrior’s Pledge (Highland Bodyguards, Book 3) by Emma Prince

“Where is yer sister?” Finn demanded when he and Niall reached the edge of the village.

Several shops had their doors propped open, and a few carts selling wares lined the muddy road that cut through the middle of the village, no doubt trying to make the most of the break in the rain. Finn’s eyes scanned the few dozen people moving about, but didn’t spot a finely garbed noblewoman.

“There.”

Finn followed Niall’s pointing finger. Standing on the other side of the muddy road was a solitary woman.

Although the clouds obscured the afternoon sun, the lass’s long, unbound hair shone like spun gold. Though she stood partially turned away from Finn, he could see that she wore a plain wool dress with little adornment.

Finn felt his mouth turn down into a scowl. Aye, the lass was having a grand time dallying in the village while her father worried about her. Did she not understand that her safety bore the weight of an alliance between two warring countries?

Before he could check his temper, he found himself storming toward the lass.

She must not have sensed his approach, for she did not turn. When he was practically on top of her, Finn wrapped a hand around her arm and spun her around to face him.

“What in the bloody hell do ye think ye’re doing?” he barked.

He didn’t attempt to smooth the glower from his features or temper his tone. What did he care if he frightened the lass? Mayhap that would teach her to obey orders when it came to her safety.

As the lass craned her neck to look at Finn, her squeak of surprise turned into a gasp of horror. His gaze landed on her upturned face, and it was his turn to inhale sharply.

Her spun-gold hair framed a heart-shaped face. Porcelain skin flushed rosily on her high, round cheeks. Berry red lips parted in shock, unable to form a response to Finn’s question.

But what froze Finn’s heart for a long moment was the lass’s eyes. At first glance he’d thought she bore the same bright blue eyes as her father and brother. But now as he gazed into their rounded depths, he realized they were soft violet.

As he continued to stare down at her, panic flickered across those lavender eyes. She tugged against his hand where it clamped around her arm, another gasp of fear rising in her throat.

Bloody hell, did she think he was another assailant out to kidnap or assault her? A fortnight ago she’d been set upon by a cloaked attacker, and now she clearly thought she was in the clutches of some unknown, savage Highlander.

Finn muttered a curse at himself. She tried to pull away from him again, backing herself into the open road. Eyes wide, she drew in a breath to scream.

“Dinnae fight me, lass,” he said, cutting off her scream just before it broke from her throat. “I’m—”

Unease suddenly lanced Finn’s gut. The ground trembled slightly under his boots.

Just then, two enormous draft horses pulling a large wooden wagon came barreling around a corner. They tore wildly down the village’s muddy, narrow main road—heading directly for the lass.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Kristina Mathews doesn’t remember a time when she didn’t have a book in her hand. Or in her head. But it wasn’t until she turned forty that she confessed the reason the laundry never made it out of the dryer was because she was busy writing.

While she resigned from teaching with the arrival of her second son, she’s remained an educator in some form. As a volunteer, parent club member, or para educator, she finds the most satisfaction working with emergent and developing readers, helping foster confidence and a lifelong love of books. She proudly tells her students she writes romance novels that they can read when they’re older.

Kristina lives in Northern California with her husband of more than twenty years, two sons and a black lab. As a veteran road tripper, amateur renovator, and sports fanatic, she hopes to one day travel all 3,073 miles of Highway 50 from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD, replace her carpet with hardwood floors, and someday throw out the first pitch for the San Francisco Giants.

Meet the Author:

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a princess…

Growing up, I was a proficient story teller, with most of my plots encompassing princesses and princes and dreams coming true. Now as an author, some of my stories are still about royalty, knights, duels, ladies, intrigue, betrayal. History fascinates me and I try to bring history back to life in each of my stories.

My favorite time periods are medieval, renaissance and Regency eras of Europe. Growing up, I was lucky to have grandparents who lived in Paris, so many a summer was spent exploring medieval ruins and historical sites.

One of my all time favorite books is Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, and I am of course Jane Austen fan, my two favorites being Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I love the in-depth, emotionally riveting and intriguing works of historical author, Ken Follett. I am also a fan of Shakespeare, and you will find in a lot of my writing reference to the literary God and his work. Not only Shakespeare, but other period poets and literary notables of history are on my keeper shelf. My love affair with the romance genre started young. I picked up my first romance novel, The Bride, by Julie Garwood when I was in high school, and I haven’t been able to stop reading or writing romance since.

When I’m not reading or writing I am usually doing research for fun. If you love history, come visit me at History Undressed, where we discuss all the wildly fascinating and titillating facts of history! Recently I’ve started to post reviews of historical fiction and romance novels as well.
